7 Medicinal Plants from Indonesia with Proven Health Benefits

Indonesia is home to a wealth of medicinal plants known for their healing and disease-preventing properties. According to Professor Dr. Edi Dharmana, an immunologist and herbal researcher at Diponegoro University, these plants are often utilized due to their easy availability in the region. Many people even cultivate wild plants for daily use, a practice rooted in centuries of herbal medicine.

Here are 7 notable medicinal plants from Indonesia that have been proven to offer health benefits:

1. Temulawak (Curcuma zanthorrhiza)

Temulawak, a member of the ginger family, is highly regarded in traditional medicine. Dr. Roy Sparringa, former head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), notes that temulawak is included in over 900 registered traditional medicine products, making it one of Indonesia's premier medicinal plants.

Native to Java, temulawak has spread to Southeast Asia, Indochina, China, Japan, Korea, Barbados, and the United States, with the best varieties found in Indonesia. It is known for its ability to boost appetite, strengthen the immune system, support liver function, provide antioxidants, improve digestion, and reduce blood fat levels.

2. Saga (Abrus precatorius)

Saga is commonly found along roadsides. Heru Wardana, head of Kampoeng Djamoe Organik in Cikarang, states that the leaves can be chewed to relieve coughs and throat issues. He assures that it is safe for pregnant women, as the effects are localized to the throat.

3. Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar)

Bangle is an erect, herbaceous plant that grows up to 1.5 meters tall and is related to temulawak, turmeric, and ginger. According to the book "Tanaman Obat Keluarga," bangle contains minerals, albumin, and essential oils, making it effective for reducing inflammation and relieving pain and fever.

4. Meniran (Phyllanthus urinaria)

Meniran is often overlooked as a common weed, but it has significant health benefits. Dr. Helmin Agustina Silalahi, medical manager at PT Kalbe Farma, explains that meniran has been shown to aid recovery from flu due to its immune-boosting properties, which can help speed up recovery from coughs.

5. Seledri (Apium graveolens)

Often used as a culinary herb, celery leaves also serve as a medicinal plant that can help lower hypertension. Some experts are developing celery as a phytopharmaceutical, meaning it is a herbal medicine that has undergone clinical testing for safety and efficacy.

6. Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia)

Mengkudu, related to coffee plants, is known for its bitter fruit, which has been studied for its potential to help with heart disease and diabetes. Prof. Dr. Ediati Sasmito from Universitas Gadjah Mada states that polysaccharides in mengkudu may serve as immunostimulants, helping to normalize immune function, especially in cancer patients undergoing treatment that compromises their immunity.

7. Kumis Kucing (Orthosiphon aristatus)

According to Dr. Danang Ardiyanto from the Health Research and Development Agency, kumis kucing can aid in urinary health. He often combines kumis kucing with other medicinal plants to create effective herbal formulas. For instance, kumis kucing helps with urination, celery dilates blood vessels, temulawak promotes vitality, and meniran boosts immunity. This synergy exemplifies the philosophy of traditional herbal medicine.

These seven plants illustrate the rich tradition of herbal medicine in Indonesia, highlighting their various applications in promoting health and wellness.
